FAQs
What is PIN?
Physician Independent Network (PIN) is a management services organization that provides practice management and administrative support services to independent primary care physicians & group practices.
Does joining PIN now make me an employee of PIN?
No, you remain completely independent. Physicians Independent Network (PIN) is not your employer—we simply provide the support, resources, & opportunities for you to flourish as your own individual practice while you maintain FULL control over your office and patient care.
I fear that, with capitated arrangements, my patients and I could have limited choices and access to care from the best specialists.
- While this is a valid concern and some patients may not have specialists in our network, we counteract this problem by credentialing out-of-network specialists so that your patients can have the best coverage possible.
- When you sign the contract with us, you’ll provide a list of the specialists your patients most frequently use. This allows us to complete the accreditation process at the same time for both you and your most commonly used specialists. Therefore, your patients will be covered for both.
Are there any shared risk-reward options to choose from? If yes, how does that work?
- For the first 6 months of our arrangement, you are not at risk. You will receive 50% of the bonuses for any vaccinations, as well as for following HEDIS guidelines & measures.
- During this time, you will be advised on how to decrease your MLR & increase your MRA.
- After the 6 months are up, you will have the potential to earn distribution based on MLR, MRA, hospital admissions, use of generic medications to 85%, specialists, and diagnostics.
Are there physicians available to answer any questions I have before committing to PIN?
Yes, our physicians are always willing and open to answer any lingering questions you may have about our organization.
Will Physicians Independent Network replace my current billing department since it is taking over coding and claims for my Medicare Advantage patients?
No. We will handle encounters for Medicare Advantage patients who are enrolled in PIN while providing additional assistance as needed. You are free to continue with your own billing staff as normal if you’d like.
How do you help me achieve my ideal practice as a physician?
We help you build a more profitable, efficient, and independent practice by handling administrative burdens like documentation, claims filing, and compliance. We optimize your Medicare Advantage participation, maximize revenue through better contracts and performance-based bonuses, and provide flexible, risk-free options—all while ensuring you maintain full control over patient care.
How does PIN make money?
PIN is compensated by Medicare Advantage plans through:
- Performance-based revenue sharing: When our network of primary care physicians achieves important healthcare & efficiency benchmarks (such as MLR & MRA), we participate in the resulting cost savings.
- Service fees: Medicare Advantage plans provide PIN with compensation for managing several essential services including medical coding, claims processing, care coordination, and patient education about Medicare Advantage options during enrollment periods.
What is MLR and MRA?
- MLR stands for “Medical Loss Ratio.” This is a measurement showing what percentage of premium dollars an insurance company spends on medical care and quality improvements compared to administrative costs and profit.
- MRA stands for “Medicare Risk Adjustment.” This is a way to calculate how much money insurance companies should get based on how sick or healthy their patients are. The sicker the patients, the more money the plan receives to care for them.
It seems like the documentation process for Medicare Advantage patients is very time-consuming. I don’t know if I can manage all of that.
It’s true that Medicare Advantage patients require a certain level of documentation. However, Physicians Independent Network can help you easily navigate these documentation requirements with the use of our innovative technological programs, which maximize efficiency and return.
How can I join Physicians Independent Network?
First, we’ll arrange a meeting (in-person or online) to go over which Medicare Advantage plan options would be best suited for you. Once you are satisfied with your plan option, we will send you the agreed-upon contract. After signing, we will assist you in getting credentialed with the plan and we will send out plan representatives to help explain plan details to you, your staff, and your Medicare patients.
Can I back out of my agreement at any time? If so, do I keep my patients?
- Yes, you can leave according to the terms of the contract (60 days from delivery of written notice).
- Yes, your patients are yours ALWAYS. We do not keep any of your patients upon termination of our agreement
